Where it all began
The first professional footballers
In 1879 Darwen became the first working-class mill-town club to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals — and in doing so paid Fergus Suter and Jimmy Love, the first professionals in the English game. Our story was told in Netflix's The English Game. A year earlier, Barley Bank staged Lancashire's first floodlit match.
Today we're a community club with Men's and Ladies First Teams — carrying the same motto: Absque Labore Nihil.
